In 1709, Russian Tsar Peter the Great defeated the invincible army of King Charles XII of Sweden in a small Ukrainian town called Poltava (Pultava in Finnish). 10,000 Swedish soldiers were killed – including many Finns.
The crushing defeat paved the way for the future: the Swedish Empire era ended, and Finland and Sweden parted ways.
