Description

During Viking Age, brooches were used to close the neckline of a tunic, cloak or just for a decoration in general. This beautiful tortoise brooch is made of high quality bronze, and it is a detailed replica of a Viking brooch found in Saltvik, Åland. The original find dates back to 9th century.

The tortoise brooches served – always worn in pairs – to attach the shoulder straps of the upper garment to the apron. They were used mainly by women.

Often one or even several decorative chains were worn between the brooches, hung one on top of the other, and sometimes these were additionally attached to a round fibula or trefoil brooch in the middle of the chest. Sometimes small decorative utility tools were also hung from the brooches at the end of chains. On the back of this brooch, there is a sturdy needle to help with different attachments.

Since the tortoise brooches were always worn in pairs in the Viking Age, to attach the shoulder straps of the clothing, it is advisable to order two pieces. The brooches are sold individually and the price is for a single (1) oval brooch.
