Description
The Cold Steel’s Soldier’s Targe is very similar to Cold Steel’s Medieval Buckler (Product No. 92BKPB). The round shield is about twice the size of the buckler and just as stout and reliable.
Targes are flat round shields commonly 45–55 cm in diameter and generally had center bosses. Targes were commonly used for example in the British Isles and targe was a general word for shield in late Old English. Also the word target (something to aim at) comes from the name of these shields. A Highlander was usually armed with a broadsword or dagger in one hand and targe on his other arm for close combat. It was also common for a dirk to be held in the targe hand, with the blade extending below the targe.
The synthetic targe shield is stoutly made and has a thick, sturdy, raised boss to protect the hand, and a rugged handle that will withstand plenty of hard use. There is good room inside the boss for your protective gauntlets.
The shield is mainly intended to be used with synthetic and wooden swords. It’s not made to be used against metal weapons even though it will last fairly well against steel in light practice. Using a steel training sword against this synthetic shield will wear the shield out faster.
