Description
The design of the Burgundy cross flag, a saltire, is based on the wooden cross where St. Andrew allegedly was crucified. The symbol was used by Spain as an ensign at sea, from 1506-1701. When King Charles the First of Spain ascended the throne, he adopted as his standard the Spanish Ensign, or “Cross of Burgundy”, in honor of his father Philip, the Duke of Burgundy. As it served as the flag of the Viceroyalties of the New World (Bandera de Ultramar), this is the flag which led conquistadors from Florida to and across Mexico. The flag is still used as a historical symbol in the countries which once were in the Spanish empire and is flown as a reminder of the influence Spain had on the world for 400 years.
The flag is double sided, and made of durable indoor/outdoor nylon. 93cm x 150cm (36.6” x 59”) with metal grommets.
