German M-24 Wooden Handle Hand Grenade

Description

A replica of the German M-24 hand grenade used in the First and Second World Wars. The M-24 Stielhandgranate was in common use on all fronts, and because of its special appearance, this hand grenade was often called a potato masher (kartoffelkeule).

This model was introduced in 1915 and was further developed during the First World War, when it was used throughout the German Empire. In 1924, the model was slightly narrowed, the handle extended, and the belt clip of the explosive head removed. In practice, it was noticed that the soldiers tucked these hang grenades under the belt, so no separate belt clip was needed. The slightly longer handle made it easier to carry these grenades under the belt. This replica grenade can also be used to re-enact the First World War. There is a small difference between the M-15 and M-24 grenades, but the overall appearance of these two models remain the same. These hand grenades were used in World War II on all fronts. In addition to the Germans, these hand grenades were also used by several other countries and armies. M-24 grenades were also purchased and used in Finland during the Winter War.

This grenade was tuned by opening the cap on the lower end of the handle and pulling on the string found inside. The string passed through the hollow wooden arm and tuned the explosive found inside the metallic top end. After a delay of about five seconds, the grenade exploded. The lower end cap cannot be opened in this replica.

On the side of the explosive head there is a reminder “Vor Gebrauch Sprengkapsel einsetzen” “Before use insert detonator”. These grenades were delivered to the front without detonators, to avoid accidental explosions on the way.
