Richard the Lionheart was the King of England 1189-1199 and a hero in his own time even though he was a violent and a cruel king. He waged many wars and conquested new territories under the flag of England. Most famous of his war campaigns is the crusade to Jerusalem where he commanded European armed forces against Saladin and Muslim forces. When returning from Jerusalem he was captured in Austria and after a hefty ransom was able to return to England only a moment before a coup where his brother John would have taken the crown to himself.
