A shelf glove is a protective glove worn on the hand that holds the bow in archery. It has a smooth surface where the arrow rests before shooting. This smooth surface reduces friction between the arrow and the hand, ensuring a clean release and improving accuracy. Additionally, the shelf glove protects the hand from discomfort, abrasions and potential injuries caused by contact with the arrow and fletchings during the shooting process. As the arrow is released from the top of your hand, the arrow shaft and fletchings scrape your hand with every release.
If you are using arrow with damaged fletchings, it’s possible to get a proper cut or wound on your bowhand if you are not using a shelf glove. This is not likely, but shelf glove protects you from these rare accidents also.
