Description
The Templars were founded in 1119 after the first crusade and this five-cross Templar flag has been used since at least the 13th century. The central element of the flag is St. George’s cross which is still used as the national flag of England. St George is also the patron saint of Georgia and this flag is very similar to the Georgian national flag. The design was adopted as a variant of the Jerusalem cross, a symbol used by crusaders in the Holy Land, which likewise used a large central cross with four smaller crosses of the Templars in the four quadrants. The crosses of the Templar flag are said to have represented the five wounds of Jesus. The four smaller crosses are said to symbolize either the four books of the Gospel or the four directions in which the Word of Christ spread from Jerusalem.
This striking flag measures 93 x 150 cm (36.6” x 59”) and is made of indoor/outdoor nylon with metal grommets.
