Description

During Viking Age, small needle boxes were used to ensure that the precious needles made of bone or metal did not get lost and were always at hand. The needle boxes were usually worn on a ribbon or chain hanging from one of the two bowl fibulae. Needle boxes were also made of bone or antler, but boxes made of bronze were common. Needle boxes made of bronze with a decorative plate are known from several Viking Age sites and were particularly common all over the Baltic region.

This needle box is a detailed replica of a historical find from the Viking Age. It is made of bronze, and it is decorated with “Jelling”-style ornament plate.

The box is open on both sides. It is recommended to use (for example) small amount of virgin wool (or cotton wool) inside the needle box – this will provide the necessary hold for the needles so they do not slip out accidentally and are still easy enough to grip and get out when needed.
