Wooden Gladius

Description

Both the gladiator and the legionnaire used wooden weapons for training in part to protect the metal ones from unnecessary damage, and in part to minimize the risk of serious injury. Not only were wooden swords used by Gladiators for training, but if he survived the arena and lived long enough to retire, a symbolic wooden gladius (Rudis) was awarded as a token of discharge and freedom.
