Description

Yggdrasil is a giant ash tree in Scandinavian mythology that supports the entire universe and is the center of the cosmos. The universe consists of nine worlds connected by Yggdrasil. Humans and gods live in Midgård (translated as the middle yard) and at the roots of the tree there are both the kingdom of death and the dead Helheim and the kingdom of ice, fog, darkness and cold Niflheim, where the ice giants live.

Yggdrasil is the center of many important stories in Scandinavian mythology. For example Odin gained wisdom after drinking from a spring under the Yggdrasil and learned the secrets of the runes after hanging himself from this tree. According to the stories, life rises again from this world tree even after Ragnarök, destruction of the world.
